Dolores (Loli) Alcaide-Mendez is currently a Senior Wealth Strategy Associate at UBS Financial Services. With 25 years in finance and BA in anthropology, she has leveraged her knowledge by holding crucial leadership roles in several successful non-profit Mexican dance companies as founder, board member, fundraiser, grant writer and director of business planning and development. However, the role she is most proud of is that of stage-mom to her two daughters who grew to love Mexican culture and its dance, and who continue the legacy of giving back to their community as they obtain their higher education.
Born in Mexico but brought to NYC as a child, Loli’s identity is strongly rooted in Mexico. Though she was raised in the United States she feels strongly that Mexico’s teachings, traditions, and values should not only be preserved, but shared. Loli earned her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College, where her passion for learning about her Mixtecan roots and culture was the basis for her undergraduate thesis and ethnography “A Transnational Community: Mixteca Immigrants in New York City.” The research for her thesis was her opportunity for immersion into Mexican culture both in Mexico and in NYC. Findings during her research ignited her desire to give back to the community which forged her identity, with a particular emphasis on the community’s youth.
A natural mentor at heart, Loli has proven to have a natural ability to build rapport with the communities she works with, including local artists. Her experience in finance and business, appreciation of culture, as well as love and advocacy for NY’s immigrant community, provide a solid resource for Minority Arts & Media to draw upon as its presence grows in our city and surrounding communities through its programs and initiatives.
